Honorary Life Awards
Presented to the following in recognition of their valuable service to the seed industry in Alberta

 

Barry Mehr  
Edmonton, Alberta

Effective December 1, 2004, Barry was appointed to the position of Deputy Minister of Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development (AAFRD). Previously, Barry was Deputy Minister of Alberta Innovation and Science for one year. Before that, Barry served four years with Alberta Economic Development (AED), the first two as Assistant Deputy Minister of Investment and Trade and the latter two as Deputy Minister.

Prior to his employment with AED, Barry served 23 years with AAFRD, which included 17 years as Assistant Deputy Minister in the trade and investment sector, and the production and marketing sector. He also has a background in the private sector, having been engaged in the food industry in various management capacities with Swift Canadian Co. Ltd. Barry graduated from the University of Toronto, with a BA (Food Chemistry).

Barry and his wife Judy enjoy spending time with their six children and nine grandchildren. He also enjoys participatory sports and coaching, hiking in the mountains, and other outdoor activities.

Ken Wulff  
Camrose, Alberta

Ken was born and raised in the Morinville area on a small mixed farm. In 2004, the family farm received the award for 100 years of farming in the Sturgeon County. The land is now owned and farmed by his sister and her husband, Ken and Jeannine Krywko. His career in the Agriculture Business started at the Morinville Seed Cleaning Cooperative in 1985 as a plant operator. He became the Assistant Manager in 1988 and played a big part in the construction of a second cleaning line designed for Peas and Export Oats. In 1994 Ken was approached by Alberta Wheat Pool to fill a position in the Seed Business procuring Oats for the Export Market as well as working with Seed Growers doing Seed Production Contracting in the central Alberta Territory. In 1997, the position moved to Camrose with the realignment of Territories. In 1998, with the merger of Manitoba Pool and Alberta Pool, Ken was offered the position of Manager Operations and Logistics overseeing Agricore Seed Cleaning Plants in Grande Prairie, Camrose and a Treating Facility in Rivers, Manitoba. In addition to the plants he managed the seed labs in Grande Prairie and Camrose. In 2000, another company restructure moved his position to the Head Office in Calgary. In 2001, Agricore and UGG announced a merger and this brought Ken back to Camrose where he currently resides and continues to work for Agricore United as Manager of Plant Operations.

In 1988, Ken married Kathy, a Registered Nurse, who is employed as a surgical unit at the hospital in Camrose. They have two lovely daughters, Jenessa (15) and Tara (12) who are both actively involved in dance.

Throughout his career, Ken has had the opportunity to attend many workshops and courses which include Commodity Marketing, Crop Protection, Seed Tech workshops at Olds College, Canada Labor Code training and Management Fundamentals to name a few.
