Alberta Crop Yields Continue to Drop on Drought

Crop yields in Alberta are down 60 per cent from the five-year average due to the ongoing drought, the August 24 provincial crop report says.

Provincially spring wheat yields are estimated to be at 30 bushels per acre, barley at 38 bushels, oats at 47 bushels and both canola and peas estimated at 25 bushels to the acre, the report says.

Overall, weather has been chillier and wetter in the province over the last few weeks, the report notes. Almost all areas received 10 to 80 mm of rain.

While the moisture is too late to support most crops, it is very welcome and it will replenish much-needed soil moisture reserves,” the report says.

Harvest was stopped in some parts of the province due to the rain. However, 72 per cent of the Alberta pea crop is now in the bin, 23 per cent of barley and 15 per cent of spring wheat. Overall the provincial harvest is 17 per cent done, with the the southern portion of the province leading the charge at 34 per cent complete.
