Railways to Resume Operating, Bringing an End to Labour Dispute

Rail operations across Canada are set to resume today following a ruling from the federal labour board that ended the work stoppage.

Last Thursday, Canadian National Railway Co. (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) halted their services, leading to widespread disruptions in freight transportation. This move came amid a contract dispute with the Teamsters union, affecting over 9,000 railway workers.

The work stoppage was officially brought to a close at 12:01 a.m. ET on Monday after the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) issued a decision on Saturday, requiring both companies and their workers to return to their duties, pending binding arbitration.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference president voiced strong opposition to the CIRB’s decision, announcing plans to challenge the ruling in court. Meanwhile, CPKC, headquartered in Calgary, warned that it could take several weeks for the rail network to recover fully and for supply chains to stabilize.
