I often say that seed testing is the job that picks you. It’s not on the list of careers you learn about as a child like a fireman or a doctor — or even if you’re in agriculture. I grew up on a dairy farm and I thought I’d go into animal science. Turns out I didn’t have the backbone for that. I found my true calling in seed technology.
Though it hasn’t been a straightforward path, my journey in seed testing has been fueled by an unwavering passion for the intricate role seeds play in agriculture. Each seed that comes through our lab represents a promise — a potential for growth that sustains communities and farmers.
At Seed Check, we understand the work we do extends far beyond testing, beyond data and results. Over the lab’s 22-year legacy, we’ve focussed on forging genuine relationships with our clients, understanding their unique challenges, and navigating a path toward greater success. Through innovative testing methods, we’re able to assess how seeds will perform under real-world conditions. This is more than a technical requirement — it’s about instilling confidence in farmers, ensuring they can rely on the seeds that will feed our future.
We believe that every seed holds a story — and for me that narrative began with my great-grandmother. She’d moved to Canada from the U.K. to marry my great-grandfather after the First World War. In case the marriage didn’t work out, her family gave her passage money to return home. She used the money to plant seed. She laid down roots. Her story is a poignant example of the transformative nature of seeds.
As we navigate the complexities of today’s agricultural landscape, I’m more determined than ever to champion the significance of what we do. We envision a future where sustainable farming practices thrive, where seeds of knowledge bloom into fruitful harvests, and where farmers are equipped with the tools they need.
