Seeding progress across Alberta jumped this week with 32 per cent of acres planted in the ground, the May 11 provincial crop report says. Last week there was 17 per cent of the crop seeded.
The southern region has the most seed in the ground at 55 per cent done, central is at 32 per cent, the north east, north west and Peace regions are 17 to 23 per cent done. Out of the crops peas have the most acres planted.
“All regions are ahead of the five- and 10-year statistics for this week, as we saw excellent seeding conditions prevalent across Alberta. The crop emergence estimate is currently three per cent, which is in line with the five-year and 10-year averages,” the report says.
Welcome Rains
The first widespread rains of the growing season were recorded with 10 to 40 mm of precipitation falling across the majority of growing regions, the report says. However, many parts of Alberta are still in need of more moisture, especially the eastern part of the province.
Spring temperatures are still bringing overnight frosts and inconsistent daytime highs which are slowing forage growth, the report notes.
“The recent rains have benefited perennial growth and acres are starting to green up, but more moisture is required in many areas.”
