Farmers will have access to proprietary, advanced herbicide trait technology for canola for the 2023 planting season, according to a release.

Corteva, Inc. announced the commercial launch plans for Optimum GLY canola, which is herbicide-tolerant. Starting in 2023, Corteva Agriscience seed brands Pioneer and Brevant will offer Optimum GLY canola in Canada and the United States for commercial planting. Pioneer exhibited Optimum GLY canola in Australia to prepare for a full launch in 2024. In the future, broader genetic backgrounds and maturities will be increased.

“We are pleased to launch our Optimum GLY herbicide-tolerant trait technology, which represents a significant advancement to further strengthen Corteva Agriscience’s industry-leading canola portfolio and bring new propriety traits to the market,” said Chuck Magro, chief executive officer of Corteva Agriscience. “A culmination of years of research and development, Optimum GLY canola is designed to deliver top yield potential and agronomic trait performance for canola farmers, providing them with a greater measure of control over their crops.”

This new proprietary glyphosate trait technology will give planters advanced weed control with a wider window to apply herbicides, offering more flexibility to effectively and responsibly handle their weed management programs compared to first-generation glyphosate trait technology.

Canola is an important crop as it’s a high in protein and oil while still being low in saturated fats. It’s critical to help meet worldwide food and energy needs, making new technology like Optimum GLY canola so crucial.

“The launch of Optimum GLY canola builds on Corteva Agriscience’s track record of delivering innovations to farmers,” continued Magro. “This is another solution from our robust pipeline that solves farm-level and field-level specific challenges while helping address global food security.”

Pioneer and Brevant will offer the Optimum GLY herbicide tolerance to farmers in Canada through spring canola hybrids. U.S. and Australia based farmers can access this new technology through Pioneer. To provide more farmers with the flexibility to choose their herbicide tolerant canola hybrids, Corteva has plans to out-license Optimum GLY herbicide tolerance technology.
